TFC Welcomes
Coach Coach Chris Cheney.
Coach Chris Cheney has joined The Fencing Center’s coaching team!
With over 25 years of high-level fencing experience, Chris Cheney joins The Fencing Center as a key coach, bringing a rare combination of elite competitive success, proven athlete development, and international refereeing authority.
A two-time national team champion and 2009 U.S. Junior World Cup team member, Chris transitioned to coaching in 2011. Over the past 15 years, he has developed national medalists and international competitors while guiding fencers to premier NCAA collegiate programs, including Yale, Notre Dame, Case Western Reserve, and WPI.
Chris is also an active FIE-licensed referee officiating international Senior and Junior World Cups and Pan American Championships. His deep refereeing resume includes over 70 national finals, six NCAA Championship invitations, and multiple Ivy League and ACC finals. Twice voted Outstanding Saber Assigner by his peers, he also serves as a certified Referee Instructor and Observer.
Chris’s dual background gives TFC fencers a distinct tactical advantage: learning to fence with precision, mental discipline, and an insider’s understanding of how referee decisions are made at the world class level.
Welcome aboard, Coach Chris, to the Fencing Center family!
