He started teaching at MTeam from its start 24 years ago and helped create its culture and methodology of producing fine young people and great fencers. Himself a great foil fencer Dean was a member of the United States National Fencing Team (1991-1992) and its # 1 ranked foil fencer, and in 1991 he earned a Silver Medal at the Pan American Fencing Team event, he was a member of 1991 World Team for US, as well as a winning a Gold Medal at the National Fencing Team event in 1984. In 1987 he won a team silver medal at the US Nationals. The program has been very successful, and Dean has been a very important part of its success.
Since 2001 USA Nationals, this program’s fencers have won more National gold medals than any other foil program in the USA. Overall count includes a record 72 USA National GOLD medals and a total of 317 USA National Medals! In the 2012 London Olympics, three foil fencers representing the USA were from this program, and at the 2008 Olympics the lone US foil fencer was from this program, at the 2016 Rio there were 3 fencers, and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics there were also three from this program, all under the tutelage of Dean in one form or another. While meaningfully successful and talented, Dean is a humble person at his core and a team player.
